The language used in the apology and the Burkett interview were so incredibly ill-advised that it makes me think that the smell of fear and desperation can be cut with a knife at CBS.

Neither the language used nor the self-serving Burkett interview were necessary. They were, simply put, stupid things to do.

A simple apology to Bush and to CBS's viewers for using forged documents which Rather mistakenly thought were kosher was all that was needed. End of story. Say something like we don't want to dignify this sorry episode by continuing to dwell on it, our standards will be revised upwards, we'll take steps to make sure it doesn't happen again, yada, yada, good night, sleep well.

The question is why haven't the obvious, simple steps been taken?

The answer is that there is more to it than presently meets the eye. A lot more.

Cui bono.
