Varian Semiconductor Announces Shipment of its 100th Single Wafer VIISta High Current Ion Implanter
Wednesday October 6, 3:30 pm ET

GLOUCESTER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 2004--Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSEA - News) announced today that it has shipped its 100th single wafer VIISta high current ion implanter. The VIISta 80 series ion implanters are in use by DRAM, Logic, and Foundry customers around the world.
"In the past twelve months, Varian Semiconductor's installed base of VIISta single wafer high current ion implanters has nearly doubled," said John Aldeborgh, Varian Semiconductor's vice president of sales and marketing. "During this time, we have won seven new high current customers. The momentum behind the VIISta 80HP continues to build as evidenced by customers placing repeat orders for our VIISta single wafer high current products."

"The recent widespread adoption of the VIISta high current product is due to its unique single wafer architecture which prevents damage to delicate device structures in sub-65nm devices," said Ernest Godshalk, president and chief operating officer of Varian Semiconductor. "Achieving this milestone confirms Varian Semiconductor's expanding presence in the high current ion implant market."

The VIISta platform of ion implanters is the only single wafer platform solution for all production applications available. All of the VIISta products feature the Varian Control System (VCS(TM)), the Varian Positioning Systems (VPS(TM)) and a common single wafer endstation. This high degree of commonality across the VIISta platform facilitates process matching throughout the tool set and provides flexibility in managing capacity, product mix changes, spare parts and training.
