My father did not come home from WW II with any medals. He reports that he was fortunate to have the disdain of his CO. (He was in the european theater in France, Belgium, then Germany. The Germans were devious.)

My Father-In-Law earned a purple heart. I don't recall the story, but it seems like he sustained a more substantial injury than self inflicted rice in the but.
