Anti-Bush group shifts staff out of state

An anti-Bush liberal advocacy group is shifting some staff out of Arizona, adding further question to the state's battleground status in this year's presidential tilt.

But officials with America Coming Together dispute a published report that they are leaving the state because President Bush is ahead in polls over Democrat John Kerry.

ACT Arizona Director Michael Frias confirmed late Monday that his group is moving a handful of its dozen staffers in Phoenix and Tucson to other Western battleground states.

"Some staff and some resources are going to be diverted elsewhere," said Frias, who worked on Janet Napolitano's successful 2002 campaign for governor. He added that ACT's Phoenix and Tucson offices will not be closing.

ACT is an anti-Bush independent campaign group that has focused on voter mobilization efforts in Arizona and other battleground states. Its main sponsor is billionaire financier George Soros, an ardent Bush critic.

The National Journal reported Monday that ACT is shifting out of Arizona because Bush is favored here and in Michigan where Kerry is the favorite. Gore took Michigan four years ago.

Recent polls show Bush with a double-digit lead fueling GOP confidence they can carry Arizona, where Bush won in 2000.

ACT also had benefited from volunteers coming in from California to help its Arizona efforts. Frias said Arizona volunteers would not be shipped to New Mexico or Nevada where polls are closer than here.

The moves should, however, bolster GOP confidence in their Arizona efforts. Still, Republicans say they are not taking anything for granted, and Democrats insist the race in Arizona is not over.

The Kerry campaign continues its grassroots efforts despite leaving Arizona off the list for the first phase of homestretch ads.

Groups such as MoveOn and labor unions still are active in the state.
