If Barnett is entitled to his opinion, so is Kaplan. They are both guessing...and so is Friedman. I see Kaplan as a short and long term pessimist. Barnett is more of a short term pessimist and long term optimist. Kaplan is liked by the military because he doesn't want to change it. Barnett is liked by the field grades because he does want to change it. The flags give him lip service but are very resistant to moving toward the sys admin type of structure. That is to be expected. Barnett is going to end up as an NSC director or better. I disagree with Barnett on his solutions to several problems. Taiwan and Israel, to name a couple. But I don't know anybody that I read that is as interesting.
