"Grand Ayatollah Ali al Sistani, the most senior Shia cleric in Iraq tried to block Bremer's plan at every turn, calling for immediate direct elections and for the constitution to be written after those elections, not before."

Interesting quote above from klein's article. I wont get into the halliburton/bechtel stuff but from a political point of view Sistani's view on immediate direct elections back then may have anticipated growing terrorist strength under american occupation both from al sadre and zarquawi and co. Early elections may have given legitimacy to the new government before those folks got traction with weapons and large numbers of foreign fighters. We may have lost the war right there by not letting a legitimate iraqi regime truly independent of the US rise from the ashes. Perhaps they would have asked us to leave if they had things under control. Mike
