of course there's always some 'short term reason' for why prices increase - but that's what happens in bull markets.
let's say Ivan had hit the Gulf in 1998 - do you think crude oil prices would have experienced anything more than a one day jump that would soon have been sold down again?
the real reason why Ivan's effects can drive prices up for several days in a row is that it's a bull market, with a very bullish overall supply/demand backdrop.

a criminal 'justice' system gone wild...a valuable member of the community gets jailed for a non-crime. so she was lying? note that she lied under extreme pressure - she knew they were trying to pin something on her one way or another. note that she did NOT commit the 'crime' ( it is debatable whether insider trading should be considered a crime at all - but anyway, it is defined as one in the statutes ) she was originally accused of.
she only used a white lie to get the Feds off her back. now, as we all know, the government and its agents are lying all the time. there have been numerous scandals involving prosecutors being 'negligent' with the truth in order to obtain convictions. there are never any sanctions when the government or its agents lie in order to get what they want.
the mendacity of the various administrations in charge over the past few decades is downright legendary.
but Martha Stewart, whose works contribute to the betterment of our lives goes to jail.
