Huh. Too bad. Well, I was surprised that Barnett was getting away with it. He spent a lot of time bitching about how he could give The Presentation (or whatever he calls it) in his sleep and was only giving it to drones (I am exaggerating for effect here). Did not reflect well on his boss.

I don't suppose venting about supporting Kerry helped him, either.

Leaving outside the personal stuff, which could not help, he was too something-or-other about being right. Not arrogant, since I agree with him. Insufferable?

Being openly that much smarter than your boss in public is probably not wise, in the short run.

Taking a longer view -- the people over at DU think he's evil. I expect that there was a serious write in campaign against him.

Taking an even longer view - he's got a very bright future at a think tank, maybe in an administration if he can just figure out how to finesse the fact that he's a Democrat who believes in the necessity of military power. Or capitalize on it, if the Democrats ever come to their senses.

Re: PFC Foster Barton

I have received dozens of E-mails today from SF individuals...but the biggy I wanted just arrived.

I was just told that my letter requesting letters and gifts be sent to PFC Foster Barton has been posted to the US Army Special Forces list.

This list is all Green Berets including, active, retired and others who earned the honor. The men who who belong to this org do not need prodding. They only need to be informed. They take appropriate action on their own.

Let's join them. When everyone does a little the combined effort can be awesome.

PFC Barton was wounded in the knee by shrapnel and has had two surgeries. His unit is still in Iraq and he expects to deploy back there soon. You can write him direct at the address below, or send letters and cards through the newspaper at the second (newspaper) address.

PFC Foster Barton
1st Cav 4/5 ADA
1998 Farmbrook Circle
Grove City, Ohio 43123

PFC Foster Barton C/O
Jeb Phillips
Columbus Dispatch
34 S. 3rd St
Columbus Ohio 43215

I think it is important to send the Newspaper and TV reporter a message of appreciation too. E-mail them at:

Nancy.Burton@NBC.com
and
Jphillips@Dispatch.com

Several folks have asked me what I did. First, I will tell you, I have been in his shoes. I have been wounded in combat, and I was assaulted and spat on when I returned to America. We cannot let this happen to our current soldiers. Each of us must assume some responsibility for their well-being and their morale.

Without our backing, our Armed Forces morale and motivation will dwindle to nothing. Without our motivated Armed Forces our freedoms will dwindle to nothing.

Take a moment and send this kid a note. He is headed back to the war zone. Give him something to take back to his buddies besides the beating he just took in Columbus, Ohio for being a wounded American soldier.

I promised to tell you what I sent him and I will. I sent a handwritten one page note thanking him for his service. I also told him I did want his bad experience to be his memory of American civilian support. I told him we appreciate his efforts and to please tell his buddies that. I enclosed two $20s and told him it was a gift from my family and to please use it to have fun while recuperating.
