If you want a really leveraged play on oil, and one that can be held for years, there's something called Oil Sands Split (pink sheets OSDSF, listed on Toronto).

This is based on the Canadian Oil Sands Trust, which is in the process of nearly doubling output, and gets all benefit of capital appreication plus all payouts beyond those needed to cover the accompanying preferred issue. Essentially, Oil Sands Split moves 100% more than the basic Trust==but on top of that has the potential for very high payouts.

A little complex--but my holding of Energy Split has done fabulously. These things are set up by Canadian banks--I think Royal Bank of Canada does the Oil Sands Split.
