My disappearing Bush/Cheney signs and how I resolved the problem. Last week, my fourth Bush/Cheney sign which I had judiciously moved back from it's former place near the front sidewalk to a spot closer to my house, disappeared during the night. Just like the other three, this one was no where to be found. Sometimes, the thief discard the offending sign behind some bush a few blocks away from the scene of the crime. I looked to retrieve it but failed to do so. Luckily, I had another one in reserve, knowing I that I would likely lose my fourth one to whoever that Democrat was who supports Kerry by stealing Bush/Cheney signs. But this time, I devised a new strategy. My house sits near the front sidewalk. Just across the sidewalk near the curb stands an old Dutch Elm tree. I sighted a limb about 20 feet off the ground in direct line with my upstairs bathroom. I then prepared the Bush/Cheney sign for hoisting by tying four lines to it: one on the upper left corner, one on the upper right; then one on the lower left corner, and one on the lower right. I made sure that they were long enough to extend from my upstairs bathroom window across the short distance to the Dutch Elm. I then got my 24 foot ladder and climbed the tree, tying the upper lead about 26 feet off the ground and the lower one about two feet below it. Next, I went to my second floor bathroom window and fished the upper and lower leads from the sign, the upper lead fixed securely on the top portion of the window and the lower lead on the bottom portion. Finally, I started taking in the leads from both the Dutch Elm mount as well as the bathroom window mount, adjusting them so that the sign hovered directly over the sidewalk but about 20 feet above it. I secured the leads and tied a cowbell to the bottom lead on the house side. Then I walked the sidewalk to make sure that my fifth Bush/Cheney sign could easily be sighted by any one approaching it from either the left side of my house or the right. It was a perfect solution. It could be easily seen whether one's approach was from the right or the left. I was quite proud of my accomplishment. I wondered what the thief would think the next time he or she came by, only to discover that he would require a 24 foot ladder to reach the sign. The new sign has now been up about seven days. This is the longest time yet, the ground mounts having lasted only five, three, two and then one night. I really got my satisfaction yesterday. A neighbor down the block has two small boys, about seven and nine years old. I was sitting on the porch. As they approached, I heard one of the boys say: "Mommie! Mommie! Look, look. Look at Cothran's new sign. Why did he put it up there?" His mother, a good friend, replied: "Well, I guess Andrew got tired of having his signs stolen. So he has now made it harder for them to get to it." She laughed out loud as did the boys. When they passed by, they saw me sitting there. The boys gave me the high sign, laughed, and walked on by. I dearly love foiling the Democrats' best laid plans. Message 20560660
