Quote from Colin Powell's 1995 autobiography, "My American Journey," very timely in view of the recent "war of words" between the Republicans and the Democrats.

"I am angry that so many sons of the powerful and well placed and many professional athletes (who were probably healthier than any of us) managed to wangle slots in Reserve and National Guard units. Of the many tragedies of Vietnam, this raw class discrimination strikes me as the most damaging to the ideal that all Americans are created equal and owe equal allegiance to our country."

I wonder if he still believes that, and if he is willing to repeat it publicly.

In those days the military was a bit of a social program also....it would take in those with some "rough edges" and smooth them out a bit....A friend of mine announced that he was quitting high school and his father gave him the immediate choice of Army, Navy or Marines...and more than one knothead was given the option of jail time or boot camp...You are 100% correct that this generation's soldiers are a cut above ours.
