The fact is the alternatives just weren't ready during the Clinton term. Now they are. A lot changes in technology in a decade. We seriously could change over to an alternative energy sources like hydrogen, fuel cells, geothermal, etc. within a generation, if we had the will to do so. The technologies are now available. What's not available is the will to make the change. No suprise there when you consider all the money tied up in petroleum. It's a huge industry, Trillions. That sort of economic power doesn't get knocked out overnight.

What's all this nonsense about Texas carrying the weight of the nation. New Jersey has a proud manufacturing tradition. We make a lot of our own petroleum here. We also have the higest per-capita income in the country. You aren't carrying our weight. It's some of the poorer rural sections of the Deep South, like the Missippi Delta that are really a drag on our country. It's like the 3rd world in some of those areas.
