SHANGHAI BY NUMBERS

As any devotee of their local takeaway will know, the Chinese love their numbers. Here are all the figures you need about this weekend's inaugural Shanghai race...

3.387 – The circuit distance in miles. It’s the fifth longest circuit on the F1 calendar after Spa, Suzuka, Sepang and Monza.

8 – The number of hours Shanghai is ahead of the UK. The race starts at 6am British time.

13 – The minimum width of the circuit in metres. In certain corners, it is as wide as 20m.

14 – The number of corners. Seven are left-handers, seven rights.

18 – The number of months it took to build the track.

40 – The depth of the concrete in metres that had to be driven into the ground before building work could start - the track is built on swamp land.

50 – The number of cars Ferrari will sell in China this year. They hope to double that figure in 2005 as the market grows.

56 – The number of laps in Sunday’s race.

60 – The number of minutes it takes to reach the circuit by car from the centre of Shanghai.

203 – The top speed in mph that cars are expected to reach at the fastest point on the course, the straight between turns 12 and 13.

370 – The price in Chinese yuan of the cheapest ticket for the race. It equates to just £25 but the average annual wage in China is a mere 8300 yuan, or £560.

200,000 – The number of spectators that the circuit seats.

14.6m – The population of Shanghai

162m – The expected global TV audience for Sunday’s race

1.298bn – The total population of China. No wonder Bernie is so desperate to take F1 there…
