That said, it is more forgiving of lousy grease/heatsink application jobs than the bare die since there's vastly more area to work with.


I think it is called a 'heat spreader' because it does spread (fan-out, diffuse, ...) the heat transfer between the die and sink. If not, they should call it something else. The lower thermal conductivity of the grease between the spreader and the heatsink allowing for the spreading within the spreader to occur.

Anyway, enough time on that.
