Well, it is obviously a subjective thing. But Tea for the Tillerman was one of the most important albums of the era, as was Teaser and the Firecat. For a glimpse of his songwriting ability I would recommend you look at any of the lyrics from T/T. His musicianship is best exemplified by the album Foreigner; although not a commercial success, it was, musically, his masterpiece.

I don't know your age. But if you are not familiar with his first two albums (as it appears you're not), you missed them. I still find them to be great albums, but find it difficult to listen to them given his support for the the Rushdie death sentence.
