Too bad we don't have our liberal academic from Texas around to help us discuss this.

Agreed.

<<I have family in Houston. They are exactly what you think of as "Texas Republicans." On the other hand, I have a lesbian sister in Texas who thinks Molly Irvins is "right on," and is a founding member of "NOW." So I am familiar with both extremes. >>

I too have family in Houston, and in Dallas. They are not Republicans and political discussions are banned so that why I have to come here..
I also have a sister in Michigan but she is not a Lesbian and shes 84 so it dont matter much anyway.

LB, You really don't want a Texas liberal on this thread. You would end up with people like Tiger Paw. All of the liberals I have ever known in Texas, are immigrants from places like Detroit.

Houston is a fairly complex town politically because it is so big and has so many "transplants". It's a firm "Red" town and I'm sure there are quite a few "Texas Republicans" but I never met one there. Dallas, on the other hand, is overflowing with them.

Austin is a "Blue" town. Very liberal and artsy. A friend of mine who is a big bleeding heart went to grad school in Austin. He put it like this - "if you have to be stuck in Texas, get stuck in Austin".

The blues scene there used to be legendary (Stevie Ray Vaugn, RIP), which is my only interest. UT is one of the best party universities in the country, which is great if you're a student and a nightmare if you're a parent or resident of Austin. ;)
