Detroit auto makers are offering some eye-popping deals to get you to trade in your old sport-utility vehicle and drive off with one of many leftover 2004 models. But if you are thinking about answering the call, prepare for some bad news.

Values for late-model, second-hand, large SUVs, such as the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Suburban and Chevrolet Tahoe, are getting hammered, according to analysts who gather pricing data from the vast used-car market.

The decline in trade-in values is even greater. Edmunds figures the average trade-in price for a 2002 large-model SUV was $23,356 in January. As of September, Edmunds estimates the same SUV would fetch $18,936, a drop of nearly 19%. Average trade-in values for midsize SUVs like a 2002 Ford Explorer are off by nearly 13%, according to Edmunds.
