I am sorry that I was confused about the "end game" of Thyssen. Here is a summary:

Fritz Thyssen (November 9, 1873 - February 8, 1951) was a German industrialist associated with the Nazi Party of Adolf Hitler.

He was the son and heir of August Thyssen, owner of an empire of factories. During World War I the Thyssens were producing armament and ammunitions for the German army. By 1926, when Fritz inherited the empire, they controlled two thirds of Germany’s ore supplies. In 1930 he became the major financial supporter of the Nazi Party. He was also an ideological supporter, since he backed repression against trade unions and left-wing parties. However, he was in strong disagreement with the religious prosecutions of Jews. Following the Kristallnacht, Thyssen resigned to all his political offices and fled to Switzerland and then to France. Hitler confiscated all his property and demanded his capture. The Vichy government of occupied France promptly obeyed and Thyssen was sent to a concentration camp.

It should be noted that Kristallnacht took place in 1938, so he broke relations well before the incident with the Trading with the Enemy Act.

By the late 1930s, he had become increasingly disillusioned with the regime's rearmament policy (even though it scarcely harmed his business interests), and angered by its anti - Catholicism and persecution of the Jews, which caused him to resign from the Prussian State Council. In a letter to Hitler of 28 December 1939, written after fleeing Germany for Switzerland, Thyssen emphasized that his doubts about the Nazi regime had begun with the dismissal of the conservative von Papen as Vice - Chancellor followed by 'the persecution of Christianity. . . the brutalization of its priests . . . the desecration of its churches'. Thyssen observed that the Crystal Night pogrom of 9 November 1938 had deeply shocked him - '. . . the Jews were robbed and tortured in the most cowardly and brutal manner, and their synagogues destroyed all over Germany' - but his protests were to no avail.

The Nazi - Soviet pact of 23 August 1939 and the aggressive war policy of the regime had been the last straw for Thyssen, who wrote to Hitler as 'a free and upright German', claiming to be the 'voice of the tormented German nation' calling for a restoration of 'freedom, right and humanity' in the German Reich.
Thyssen's appeal was ignored, he was stripped in absentia of his German citizenship and his property was confiscated. In 1941, his memoirs, I Paid Hitler, first appeared in English, an anguished settling of accounts with the Nazi regime which 'has ruined Germany' but singularly unreliable in its recounting of his financial relationship with the National Socialists. Thyssen was arrested and turned over to the Nazis by the Vichy police for return to Germany, where he was imprisoned for the rest of the war. He died in Buenos Aires on 8 February 1951.

It was my recollection of the book which caused me to be confused about his having reached America.

What a load. Here's a question, who openly against Hitler first, Fritz Thyssen, Jay Rockefeller's father, or Senator Kennedy's?

For that matter, since you're hot to write about grandparents: Why was John Kerry's grandfather born in Shanghi?

If anything, Bush and the Harrimans were against Hitler well before most, (even Socialists and Communists) in 1940 even Stalin as a buddy of Hitler. Harriman was director of the Lend Lease Program that was vital in keeping the British war effort (then later the Soviet) afloat - before America's entry into WWII. Prescott Bush was the first Chairman of the USO - before America's entry into WWII.
