JDN: Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a Mac (or maybe two: a desktop and a notebook). It may be that the pleasure you derive from having a reliable, well-designed computing environment might turn you into a liberal <GGG>.

Edit: Seriously however, Microsoft themselves actually EXPLICITLY WARNS you before you download Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, that you must back up your system, so you can recover if it bombs. That is a very good warning to heed. That update is so pervasive and changes so many files that by the time they're done updating you effectively HAVE A NEW COMPUTER ANYWAY! That's why you might as well just buy a Mac instead.
