I don't think the masses really believe that. I think they are faced with the following two possibilites:

(1) Saddam was part of the 9/11 plot; or

(2) The United States has intentionally murdered tens of thousands of innocent people who never had any intent to harm the United States.

They know that (1) is not true, but because they are weak and morally feeble, they cannot accept (2) either. Thus they profess their belief in (1) to maintain their own sense of self-worth.

Admitting that your nation has committed a great evil is never an easy thing to do.

<The masses, though, for example, think Saddam was behind the attack on the Twin Towers.>

No, you are missing the point: this country is in a state of war, like shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Repeat after me, the World Trade Center was destroyed by Terrorists. Want to make light of that fact?

What would you like to do about that, John, outside of complain and whine about Bush? I agree that President Bush lied about Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. Sometimes, as Plato would say, we lie in order to tell the Truth. The Truth is that a message had to be sent to the Islamic Fundamentalist World after the destruction of the Twin Towers. Never again.

Maybe if this attack took place in your backyard, you would talk differently.
