The old system used a large assortment of "status" field contents to control how an account worked and whether it had access to various things, especially posting.

We've abandoned that method and instead use the UserLevel numeric field. Mainly to simplify the handling of different userlevels and because numeric comparisons are faster than string comparisons. Especially when you have to check for a LOT of different possible strings.
