For instance, they could have announced a set of cross-platform development tools that would allow development of code intended for Itanium on a Xeon; then they could have gradually made it clear, via pricing... Good money after bad. Those tools (even though they must have already had them internally) cost money to productize, even for Beta, and they're trying to fix a gusher here. Of course, perhaps there WERE no customers, and that was the root problem. Not much doubt, is there? I like to think the problem was that Sun was taking away all their sales with the Opteron boxes, but that's probably just wishful thinking. Probably :-). --QS
