They backed off, publicly dismantled some programs (Libya) and both have shown indications they are moving more mainstream, thanks to the actions taken in Iraq.

Our invitation to 9-11 was two fold. First you have to understand that our position of supporting Israel over the Palestinians in an unbalanced manner, our meddling in Iran and the installation of the Shah, our support of Saddam for decades, our presence in the middle east as carpet baggers from the west is half of the story.

Then the other half is the reluctance to respond when directly attacked, especially when the attack was on foreign soil.

Now we have an attack on our soil. There was no reluctance to attack. The nation and the world were behind the US. The attacks against terrorists in Afghanistan was supported...even by moderate and mainstream muslims.

It's my contention that a thorough and complete response against bin Laden and Al Qaeda would have turned the heads of Libya, Syria and Iraq. Iraq might have been especially motivated after seeing what "should have been" in Afghanistan coupled with a build up of forces on his border.

Meanwhile the hard work of diplomacy, and encouragement of our allies and moderate Arab nations should have continued. Weapons inspections should have continued...all the while the hammer held over Saddam's head...and the example of bin Laden's demise and Afghanistan laid before him.

A different outcome might have been likely. One that included steps toward peace in Israel and more freedom for the Iraqis.

Instead the killing of mass civilians in Iraq and the continued unrest is nothing more than a virtual bloodied nose to the Islamic world. I do believe that we've tipped too much of our hand with the war in Iraq, and we certainly have exposed the limitations of our military and our intelligence capabilities. A savvy commander in chief would never have let that happen. Unfortunately Bush is not savvy...nor is the group of PNAC neocons he calls his administration either.
