That's not a server-expense issue. It's an issue with how tickers were associated with threads on the old version. Rather than each thread being associated with a ticker, one thread would have a ticker, and each thread that had anything to do with the same ticker was assocated with the main thread rather than the ticker itself.

When I implement subject-editing, it'll include a provision for adding or changing the ticker. When a ticker is entered, the site is already set up to display quotes for that thread.

Edit: After observing performance today, I doubt that I can rightfully call *anything* a server expense issue. Sure, I'll have to make sure I continue to write efficient code, but I had things set up surprisingly well from the get-go.

I was really worried that though I knew everything worked, it might not work under a heavy load.

Last night I saw that the db server was working a little harder than just idling, and all I had to do was monitor the higher-cost queries, and each time I added indexes that'd help a specific query, CPU utilization dropped until it was flat-lined at 1% last night.

It'll be able to easily handle the increased load of dealing with filters. It's just a matter of me getting such a system written.

And I've weighed the opinions on the matter and factored in my personal preference, and the way we're going to do it is the simple way. If you ignore a user, they simply don't exist. You won't see messages from or to them. And, as on iHub, every message-reading page will have a link to quickly toggle Ignore on and off.
