While neither Acetaminophen or Hydrocodone have any reported history of causing deafness, there are many reports of deafness when these drugs are combined together as Vicodin. The cause is unknown.

Basically all opiates are nearly the same, but drugs like Oxycontin, MS-Contin and Fentanyl are preferred by those taking large quantities as they are pure opiates.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Panadol) is deadly in large quantities through liver toxicity. Thus a drug like Vicodin which combines the opiate with Acetaminophen has a safe dose which is limited by the toxicity of the Acetaminophen.

America, contrary to it's myths, is the classic nanny-state which which since it's founding has greatly limited the freedom of it's citizens "for their own good" of which pharmaceutical access is but one example.

This resulted both from the self-righteous wowsers in America's early history and the enshrinement of this religiosity as part of the war propaganda during the Civil War. The establishment of Thanksgiving as a national holiday which occurred during this period, is one example.
