mindmeld

hear you. Mostly what I'm talking about is alternative fuels for cars. If we can just increase average mpg on U.S. vehicles, then we can eliminate the Middle East as a source of oil for the U.S. That should be the goal of the U.S. Engage in a policy of ZERO purchases from the Middle East. That is the only way to cut funding to terrorists. As long as we buy oil from Saudi Arabia, we are funding the terrorist to attack us.

The problem with this is that the oil is fungible. The US doesn't really get that much oil from Mid East, but it doesn't matter. Oil bought by the US from Mexico, Venezuela, Nigeria and Angola puts as much money in the hand of Mid East sponsors of terrorism as a direct purchase, since our purchases from other sources causes others (China, Japan, Europe) to buy more from Mid East.

The only thing that can help is overall decrease of oil consumption and substitution of other energy sources for oil. This will only happen when the prices are high.

Actually, I used to be against it, but I am changing my mind slowly on some kind of extra tax on oil (and for that matter gas) in order to encourage building nuclear plants and shutting down oil and gas power plants.

Yes, it should be. Its reported over and over in the news that it should be our stated goal. So that begs the question.........why is it not?
