It seems that we used to keep enough active duty personnel to fight a two-theater war. After the Clinton strip down*, they decided to limit it to a one theater and a battle if I understand correctly.

Current war simulations are being run against the Chinese. They are a bit more populous than the US. How many troops will they amass if they decide to become belligerent?

* of the military. His personal strip downs are beyond the scope of this discussion.
