How about a tax on gasoline when oil was $28 (and bring it to European and Japanese prices) and dedicate the revenue to alternative energy and transportation systems? You can say 'hindsight is 20/20, but this was recommended so many times I can't count them.

That level of foresight and planning is beyond the scope of our elected officials. Sometimes I think we'd be better (in some instances such as this) with a Centrally Directed Gov't (Japan) or Passive Dictatorship (Singapore).
