I haven't read any of Doug R.'s posts on the PGWB thread. Doug is definitely a bright guy.

The term fascism is a little too shrill for me. Fascism usually refers to Nationalism with a Dictator and carries the additional connotation of extreme bigotry. I give Bush some credit for pacifying the virulent anti-Muslim bigots in America. And I’m not too worried about Bush becoming a dictator.

Of course many of these extremists have redirected their energy at “liberals” and “democrats”, but it hasn’t reached the point were there is any violence towards “liberals”. It is true that many people are afraid to express their views. I’ve talked to a number of Kerry supporters who will not put a sticker on their car or a sign in their yard out of fear of Bush supporters. For the most part, I think that fear is unfounded.

The current wave of Nationalism is bad enough. If we have tough economic times, Nationalism can exacerbate the economic problems and lead to violence against minorities or foreigners. I think that is a possibility.

But my main concern is that Nationalism will lead to more bad policies like the invasion of Iraq or the misguided "War on Terror".
