a couple of things that I didn;t notice being mentioned at iHub (though I didn't read that carefully)

1) you can use IE tools/internet options/privacy to set options automatically denying 3rd party cookies, you can also set 1st party cookies to be "prompt" so you get a chance to add or deny any cookie. [you may want to delete all your cookies to get a really fresh start!]

2) with something like AdSubtact you can set custom blockage for things like popups, cookies, javascripts, animations, site by site. usng this option has cut down hundreds of java scfripts a day that are just used (as far as I can tell) for advertising.

with these options, every so often somthing doesn't work (eg NY Times slideshows don't work with popup protection) so you have to be willing to override for that action

all in all these steps keep a lot of stuff off your computer
