Edwards Statement on Cheney's Past Remarks that U.S. Shouldn't Get "Bogged Down" in Iraq

WEIRTON, W.V., Sept. 29 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Senator John Edwards issued the following statement based on past comments Dick Cheney made defending the decision to leave Saddam Hussein in power after the first Gulf War and claiming that capturing Saddam wouldn't be worth additional U.S. causalities or the risk of getting into a quagmire in Iraq.

"It is inexcusable that Dick Cheney knew over a decade ago how difficult it would be to bring stability to Iraq, and yet he and George Bush invaded Iraq last year with no plan to restore peace to the country, leaving our troops unprepared and vulnerable to attacks. Despite the remarkable performance of our troops, George Bush and Dick Cheney clearly did not have any kind of plan for what they were going do once the military operation was over and we are seeing the unfortunate consequences of that right now. Attacks on our troops are rising and Americans are being taken hostage and beheaded.

"During the upcoming debates George Bush and Dick Cheney will have an opportunity to explain why Iraq is such a mess right now and the American people deserve a better explanation than what we've gotten from them so far. John Kerry and I will continue to tell the American people about our plan to create a stable and secure environment in Iraq and to lay the foundations for sustainable democracy. That is the right way to get the job done and bring our troops home."
