can you imagine what would happen if a 50% drop occurred. half the country would be bankrupted--the cascade of defaults would become self-feeding and create an enormous financial crisis (not to mention all the agency paper that could go up in smoke). Greenspan has shown he will stop at nothing to keep the asset bubbles going. i've got to think Mr. Bubbles will step in well before the decline gets too serious with some big time pump priming. the Fed will probably buy agency paper directly and monetize the ongoing bubble. spells trouble for the USD.
