Yes, we are free to live in caves and settle all disputes with sticks and rocks and knives. For some time now, civilization has been moving towards something better than that. So long as we have the most lethal sticks and rocks and knives, we can indeed choose not to be part of the civilized world, and to play no role in the progress of life on this planet. We are free to be uncivilized. IN the end, all it will cost us is the opportunity for a more peaceful and prosperous world.
