I would think that fish are very similiar within a species and the length could be estimated from shore or an airplane, and then the typical weight for that sized crittur could be estimated to the nearest 1000 lb as what was reported...15,000 lb wasn't it?

They have all sorts of formula calculations for estimating a fish's weight from the length.
