"I thought democracy was the objective? Isn't that was Bush keeps saying? If democracy isn't the objective, then what do you propose? find another Shah or Pinoche or another "Butcher of Bagdad", but this time one who is friendly to the US? Is there no moral responsibility to stay the course or is it just a political issue?"

It is the art of the possible. Folks who are talking about western democracy in iraq in the short run are probably going to be disappointed. Maybe not Pinochet--how about De Gaulle or Putin? As far as moral responsibility goes, it is limited to giving them a chance, not imposing something that is not, even with 120k american troops in the cards. Afganistan is going for democracy(not without problems) but iraq's road will be rockier and certainly wont get us there in the near term. mike
