Very sorry to hear about Vioxx's/Merk's misfortune..no position..

My impression of MRK echoes with rkrw's(honest company)..

From anecdotal experience with mom who has severe arthritis and cardiac issues(atrial fibrillation/hypertension) who has been on all of them since the days of Indocin..

Her doc discontinued Celebrex(200mg/day)..standard dose.. because of fluid retention..she happened to be one of those who suffered severe nausea to Bextra leading to its discontinuation..

Jeff was on Celebrex(400mg/twice a day)for anti-angiogenesis properties..he too suffered fluid retention..his heart was too young, accomodating..CHF/infarcts were not an issue..and he was on it for only 1.5 years..

Personally..I have a condition(Hep C..surprise, surprise after my diligence here on HepC)...thanks to a '72 blood transfusion that saved my life but also 'donated' HepC that flared up 20 years later..no liver disease but some symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome..periodic bouts of flu symptoms/joint aches ..I've done my own 'Zeta personal trials<g>)..One of my doc's shudders when I tell him of my enteric ASA regimens with flare-ups yet my internist is fine with my choice..it's the drug short of narcotics that gives me the most meaningful/immediate relief..I also experienced notable fluid retention with Celebrex, Vioxx and ibuprofen when used chronically)..with Relafin(serious platelet problems with chronic use/bruising)the ASA enteric is easier on the GI tract compared to Naproxen(in my case anyway)..anecdotal fwiw..

Curious what the numerous clinical trials using Celebrex in cancer will demonstrate with respect to this side effect..

<<At some point you wonder whether a generic NSAID plus generic omeprazole isn't a better bet than the cox-2 drugs - certainly cheaper>>

Excellent idea Peter, imo..but it's getting around the blood dyscrasias with these NSAIDS, as I understand it, that remains the big issue..imho..

Meanwhile..I'm sticking with ASA(one of the earliest anti-inflammatories and arthritis treatments..all imho..

Interesting chart on PFE today:

First reaction(lasted about 5 minutes): The Vioxx news is great for PFE!

Second reaction : Oops, let's think this one through a bit
