we live by the rule of law within our borders and we agree to certain things that have the force of law to create a more peaceful and prosperous world.

To have the real force of law there has to be a power that can enforce the law. For their to be real international law there has to be a world government. It could be one that allows the current nations a large degree of autonomy but it would have to have some real power. The UN has now power outside of the support of its member states. There is no UN army. If in places like Korea in the early 50s when there was a nominal UN Army there was really just the armies of individual countries working together that where not commanded by or answerable to the UN.
