France had extensive business ventures in Iraq before the war. (The neocons in the administration accused the French of stalling the war to protect their business interests, remember?) These contacts were not with Saddam alone but reached down into the middle ranks of Iraqi society. These contacts would have been very helpful when it came to the logistics of rebuilding Iraq.

Wonder why the Iraqi electricity grid took so long to restore, for example? Because we told the people who knew the nut's and bolts of the Iraqi systems to get lost, that we didn't need their help. Well, the evidence is clear - Bush in his arrogance botched the rebuilding of Iraq, providing fertile ground for the insurgency.

The French are known for more than wine, by the way. As I type this the world's largest commercial passenger jet is being assembled - in Toulouse, France, not Seattle. And the US Air Force wanted AirBus refueling tankers before the Neocons went nuts and let Boeing write the specs to fit Boeing aircraft...

France can exert very storng influence. They withold their wine. Oops, the major source of export francs would never stand for that. They can keep their tourist home, oops, when was the last time you saw a French tourist? Maybe...
