I agree with you that Gephardt would have been a much stronger Vice Presidential candidate. While his selection would have initially angered the Dean supporters, they would have come back into the fold.

Gephardt's selection would have solidified the union base and energerized the African-American community. Kerry is going to have a real problem with the turnout in the black community. Like Clinton, Gore had a visceral connection to the community and treated it with respect. Kerry has taken it for granted. He finally got around to adding Jessie Jackson to his campaign yesterday.

Most importantly, who wants an inexperienced one-term Senator as our Vice President during a period of war? Whatever Cheney's negatives, the contrast between the two is going to be very evident during their debate. Edwards will not match up well. I have never been a fan of Gephardt, but he would certainly be qualified to take the reins of the Presidency if called upon. Edwards would not.

If Kerry thought that Edwards was going to make the ticket competitive in the South, he was sadly mistaken.

Edwards has really been a sad candidate. If he runs for President in 2008, he will be a speed bump for Hillary.
