Hi shadowman - not a stupid reply. Logically a good one.

However, this is a Toshiba Satellite 5205-S704, and almost 3 years old. It was one of the first to have a DVD-R writer. I have used it to actually burn a DVD, although not often, because the speed is quite slow, given that it was a first generation.

It's probably been 6 months since I wrote a DVD, but I write CD's for data probably once a month. I wanted to back up most of the drived on to the DVD when I first noticed the problem.

Must be some type of driver problem or interference with another program. I have run the typical tests to no avail. The troubling issue is - why does it recognize and write cd's when it will not do the same for dvd's.
