A Marine NCO’s thoughts on George W. Bush

__________________________

Dear Uncle Will,

We just made it back to Baghdad after two weeks of firefights outside Fallujah, and will take it easy for a few days. Just glad to be alive and all my fingers and toes still with me. I know you support the president and that you are proud of my service but there are a few things I have to share with you. Food for thought. It’s chow time, so let’s call it that.

A lot of the guys here, including me are having serious doubts about why we are here. I lost three men last week. Our enemies were a bunch of teenage boys with grenade launchers, and they looked like they could have come right out of Senn (High School). They don’t want us here.

Most of them still don’t get electricity, and they are having a hard time getting food. I’d be mad too.

No one has found any weapons of mass destruction yet. And it has become a joke. I asked the Captain what he thinks about all of that and he said it looks like the President lied to get us over here. It is one thing to see people talking about that on the news, but when you have just come out of a ----hole with four guys arms or legs shot off and three dead, well it makes an impression.

Most of us are just hoping we get back to Al-Asad and fly home in one piece in a few months, and forget about this place.

Would you look something up for me? Several of the guys here say that President Bush has never attended even one funeral for the troops that were killed over here. Do you know if that is true? Because I have a couple of funerals he damn well ought to show up for. One of them was one of my Lance Corporals that got blown up by a bomb. I heard they are going to bury him in Arlington. Mr Bush wouldn’t even have very far to travel. This guy was one of the best!

We got our absentee ballots and I sent mine for Senator Kerry. I know you don’t like him, but at least the man tells the truth. Some in our unit have changed their minds about him, since they have been here in Iraq. When you are in a firefight and see men die, that changes your outlook somewhat. I know you served in the Army and thought it was a good experience. But that was in peacetime. Now we know what Kerry was talking about when he got back from Viet Nam. Hope to see you in a few months. Go Bears!
