I've heard that the dabate rules forbid either person from asking direct questions of the other.

But you might be able to get away with "what I'd like to know is this....."

I'd love to see Kerry tell Lehrer and Bush at the git go that he's not going to follow the rules, that he will directly question President Bush, and if Bush is a man, he'll answer the questions. We deserve REAL debates, not bumper stickers from stump speeches.
If Bush walked off, he'd look like a pussy. Lehrer wouldn't do anything, except maybe remind Kerry he'd agreed to the rules.
