LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE!

Remember you yold us unequivocally, no id or butd, that the UK would pull its troops out of Iraq? Remember that? And I said no such decision had been made, that the Labor Party would discuss it at their upcoming meeting? Remember?

PM defeats troops pull-out call

Sep 30 2004

Prime Minister Tony Blair has avoided a damaging defeat at Labour's annual conference over pulling troops out of Iraq after winning the backing of the big trade unions.

A constituency party motion urging Mr Blair to set an early date for the withdrawal of British forces was forced to a card vote at the conference in Brighton.

But on a show of hands in the conference hall, it was overwhelmingly defeated and with all the main unions backing the leadership, the motion seemed certain to be trounced heavily in the formal card vote.

The result of the vote should be announced later.

The unions instead backed a statement issued by Labour's governing National Executive Committee, which recognised that British troops will remain in Iraq only as long as that country's government wishes them to do so. Conference accepted the statement overwhelmingly.

The unions argued that the statement was a significant step, in that it effectively established a timetable to which the Government must work to end the British presence in Iraq.

In the long and impassioned conference debate on Iraq which Mr Blair listened to from the platform - Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon urged Labour delegates not to "abandon the Iraqi people" by backing the troops out motion.

"We cannot abandon the Iraqi people now. We must stay the course and see the job through," said Mr Hoon.

Mr Hoon said British troops were dedicated to improving the lives of the Iraqi people, re-building schools and providing security.

"What our armed forces are doing today is essential to improving the lives of the Iraqi people."

Well, radio news says the decision is in. Blair won. The troops stay. You lose.
