You know what, if I were going to parse messages on the way to the database I'd be tempted to translate all inter-SI hyperlinks to those two forms (#reply- and #subject-) just so future conversions would be easier.

Yes, that's a great idea... and ironically exactly the opposite of what we were discussing in reference to transforming links when writing them into the database. As for converting them back on the fly, I'm thinking an HTML stylesheet might work (and for other customizations as well, such as a way to convert text into pictures) but I've never programmed one.

I like it, but one would of course have to take all of the internal links into consideration. New short forms would have to be invented for links for, say profiles. Like #userid-XXXXXXX for siliconinvestor.com.
