Stan, check that you have the correct drivers >>Dell provided the wrong sound card drivers on our test system, installing the software for a Turtle Beach card instead of the Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live card that the PC came with. We alerted Dell to the problem, and the company claims it should not happen with systems shipped to regular customers.<<

I'd also turn the PC off and pull, then reinsert the sound card.

I had that problem with a DELL and they replaced the speakers no questions asked. A few months later it happened again, and I trashed the speakers and replaced them with some bought at the local Best Buy. Since then, no problems. I also had problems with the Turtle Beach sound card from DELL but even after that was fixed the speakers continued to cause trouble.

If you have a second PC, swap out the speakers and see if the other ones also cause the problem. If they don't, it may be the speakers and not the sound card.
