Hi Taikun-san,
I know that many trusts have exchangeable shares but I don't see any, not any, for sale on the market. If you own some(how??) you can trade them for the regular units at a ratio which keeps rising but buying them seems to be a different matter. They sound like dream investments. Buying ES would be unnecessary.
As for the non-trust regular stocks, you are certainly right. The capital gain is way more erratic than the monthly disbursements from trusts. By the way, if you pay taxes in the US, the taxes on the dividend are not so important so Canadian royalty trusts are actually a better deal for US residents than for Canadians investing outside of an RRSP.
