That is telling. Even though Reagan's SDI had unusually long lead times -- from basic science to applied science to manufacturing -- it succeeded brilliantly because it actually threatened to escalate the arms race well beyond the Soviet Union's reach, one of the reasons they were more willing to come to the table. In yet another sign that Kerry has never learned the lessons of the way we won the mystical Cold War against Communism, Kerry wants to stop the bunker-busting nuclear weapon research program, the sketchy outlines of which have already forced changes in the military doctrine of countries like Iran and North Korea. Amazing. One has to marvel at John Kerry's innate ability to intervene at the right time and give our enemies the chance to break our will (as in Vietnam), regroup (as in the Nuclear Freeze movement), or achieve international validation (as in Nicaragua and Iraq).
