Yes it would. From anecdotal recollection it seems that large chip makers like Intel and IBM, and merchant fab owners like the Korean and Taiwan companies that are mentioned on the thread, have kept steady or increased their cap ex.

So maybe US equip makers are losing share. Or maybe the fab business is getting concentrated. And large fabss are buying more, but small fabs are disappearing, and the net result is lower equip sales.

Gottfried, bad news for equips, good news for chips.

I was wrong about cap ex holding flat for large spenders. I checked the cash flow filings for IBM and Intel. They are producing significantly more revenue, with significantly less plant and equipment expenditure.

IBM:

Year: '03 '02 '01
revenue: 89,131,000 81,186,000 87,401,000
CapEx: (4,393,000) (4,753,000) (5,660,000)
Plant&equip: 14,689,000 14,440,000 16,504,000
----------------

Intel has similar numbers.

Year: '03 '02 '01
revenue: 30,141,000 26,764,000 26,539,000
CapEx: (3,656,000) (4,703,000) (7,309,000)
Plant&equip: 16,661,000 17,847,000 18,121,000
------------------------

If this holds up as a general pattern, then I think the chip makers will outperform the equips for a year or two.
