DHS awards $49M in port security grants washingtontechnology.com By Gail Repsher Emery Staff Writer The Homeland Security Department awarded $49.43 million in grants to 120 entities for port security improvements, Secretary Tom Ridge announced Sept. 13. The Port Security Grant Program provides money for projects to improve dockside and perimeter security at U.S. seaports. In the department’s fourth round of port security grants, 154 grants were awarded to both government agencies and private companies with port operations. Grants will go to 35 states and four U.S. territories: Three grants are for communications, including communications systems and command and control systems 49 grants are for access controls, which include identification systems and access gates 45 grants are for surveillance, including cameras, closed-circuit television and lighting 57 grants are for physical improvements, including fencing and screening and detection equipment. The following DHS units valuated this round of port security grant applications, according to the department: the Office for Domestic Preparedness, Transportation Security Administration, Bureau of Customs and Border Protection and the Coast Guard. The Transportation Department’s Maritime Administration also evaluated grant applications. It also awarded $75 million in port security grants through the Urban Area Security Initiative in August 2003.
