I've never seen the Watergate Complex. The last time I was in Washington DC was about three weeks after 9/11/01. It was eerie. The airports were deserted. The mall was deserted. Nobody on the capitol steps. The Smithsonian was deserted. Nobody at Ford's Theatre. I walked around the war memorial area in the rain at night and saw only a security officer and one or two other persons. At the Vietnam War Memorial, I quickly found the only Ellen, whom I didn't know, and a young pilot whom I did know. Their spirits were like ghosts in the rain.

Walking to our meeting place from the hotel the next morning, we saw a man on his knees praying towards Mecca. His chosen place of worship was in the middle of the sidewalk at one of those traffic circles while hundreds of cars whizzed by. We stepped around him, and he was otherwise unmolested. I wondered if he was trying to see whether somebody would beat the crap out of him. Nobody even gave him notice. I was glad for that. I guess he had as much right to be there as I did.
